"Only from our past can we learn about our present"
The Shadows Project is a multi-media, performance art project created and performed by youth from the Tumbleweeds Theatre Company, to celebrate the past while recognizing how it shapes the present. The purpose of the Shadows Project is to explore how history informs contemporary community space through an exploration of the role, and influence, of particular historical institutions. In addition, the Shadows Project looks to develop a foundation for community-based educational theatre for young artists as well as community members at large.
The Importance of Exploring Our Past
The 2009 production of the Shadows Project will focus on the role, and influence, of the Hudson’s Bay Company in the development of the community of Victoria, British Columbia. The Hudson’s Bay building is a historical centerpiece for the city of Victoria. It is currently under construction to become a residential complex. While efforts are being made to retain the historical façade of the building itself, what is difficult to preserve is the profound impact that the Hudson’s Bay Company had on the community as a whole.
The Shadows Project recognizes that ‘preserving history’ is a particularly challenging concept to realize, but hopes that by enacting the lives of the people who were touched by the Hudson’s Bay Company, they will not become victims of historical amnesia and will be celebrated as important contributors to the development of the city of Victoria. The Shadows Project sees this as an opportunity to educate the audience about the spatial and social history of their community.
